The offside rule in football is a situation that often the players within the opponent’s penalty box will find themselves in. In each case, play will resume with a free-kick after offside rule situations, parallel to where the player had initially been lurking.
The Concept of The Offside Rule in Football
Many people may be confused about what offside is, but this concept is quite simple, which we will now attempt to explain.
Running offside is not illegal in a way that would cause the player who committed it to not be hit by atrocities in addition to the fact that the opponent will come out from the situation with a free kick allocation.
The player is in an offside position if any part of the head, body or leg is in the opponent’s court and any of the body parts mentioned above are more ahead of the opponent’s goal line than the last man on the defensive team or the ball. The hands and arms of all players are not taken into account, this includes those of the goalkeepers. To determine a disadvantage, the guidelines of where the arm begins is at the armpit, where the arm attaches to the body.
The offside rule concept explained simply:
A player is not in an offside position if they are in line with, or behind, the forward-most defender of the other team. Further to this, regardless of position, there is no possible offside disadvantage if a player receives the ball from a throw-in, corner kick or goal kick.
Changes in the Offside Rule Over the Years
Over the years, the offside rule has changed to adjust to the adaptions that have been made to the game and, in addition, the changes were also made to make football more fun and understandable for fans, and to give attacking players more goal scoring opportunities.
The offside rule change has been modified by the game legislators, IFAB (International Football Association Board). This modification includes that a player is offside when he makes a clear attempt to play the ball, and/or is close to the ball, or affects the opponent, or takes obvious action under the influence of opponents whilst behind the defending line.
In other words, if there is a player lurking, he must continue to play and allow the game to continue, however, he must go back to a so-called off-duty position.
These were the most important things to know about the rules of the offside and its changes. As you have hopefully been able to see, this isn’t really a complicated rule, but often even the best, like ex-Juventus player Cristiano Ronaldo or Argentina’s Lionel Messi, can be offside.
